Lena Lashes (Lena Cosmetics) More Matte Than Matte Liquid Lipstick Review & Swatches

Front to back: Stephan, Denzel, James, and Angelo

I'm thoroughly fascinated by the concept of liquid lipstick. It goes on as a liquid, but then dries down to a powdery dry finish as if by magic! I'm also a big sucker for the beautiful tubes that many of the companies have started using to sell their magical lip wonders. So when I was browsing my Instagram and saw the gorgeous packaging of Lena Lashes liquid lipsticks, I couldn't help but go to the website and check them out for myself.

I noticed that Lena Lashes has a email newsletter as well as text messages that you can sign up to get. I've been trying not to spend a bunch of money on makeup, and so buying these liquid lippies at full price just wasn't going to happen anytime soon. Soon after signing up for text messages, I started receiving promo codes a few times a week. Lena Lashes sends out texts regularly with discounts for all of their products. (Today I received a text with a promo for five liquid lipsticks for $50 and 50% off glitter and lashes.) So when I got a text message for $8 liquid lipsticks, I had to jump on it and check out the selection. It was the perfect time to give this brand a try.

I'm a fan of nude and pink shades. I can pretty much pull off any lip shade (except for some of the orange-coral colors) but I tend to stick with nudes and classic mauve-pink colors. So I decided to get three colors that I know I could use on the everyday basis, and one color for when I'm feeling a little playful and want that extra attention. When you go on the L.L. website, you'll notice that they have the lip shades categorized by color family to make it a little easier to find something in a color you know you can rock. I chose "Stephan" from the nude category, "Denzel" from the pinks, "James" also from the pinks, and then "Angelo" who is in the general More Matte Than Matte category.

First off, when they named these babies More Matte Than Matte, they weren't lying. They are very matte, and very dry. I recommend using lip balm prior to applying this stuff to your lips. With the exception of Angelo, all of these colors are very opaque and you get an immediate color pay-off.
I'm not used to liquid lipsticks having such a thin consistency so when I first wore James I kept applying more and more product. Do not do this! Not only do your lips start to feel heavy, but the dried lipstick will actually start to flake off of your lips. After a week of experimenting with these gorgeous guys, I discovered that these are actually better when applied with a brush. The applicator that comes with these does work great, but if you want that perfect definition, or if you want to mix shades (which I highly recommend doing), use a makeup/lip brush. You'll notice that as you wear these through the day, they have a sweet sugary taste. A lot better than the clay taste a lot of liquid lipsticks have. This also lets me know that I've been licking my lips, and maybe I should check them out in the mirror to make sure my lipstick is still intact.

PROS:

  • Immediate color pay off
  • Super fast drying time
  • Doesn't smear once dry
  • Blend well with other shades
  • Fast shipping
  • Kiss-proof
  • Paraben free
  • Cruelty free
  • Vegan and gluten free
  • Smooth application with included applicator wand
  • That packaging!

CONS:

  • Flakes when layered too thick
  • Needs to be touched up after meals
  • Ingredients not listed on packaging (only partial listed on website)
  • $18 for 2 oz tube (regular price. Sales do happen regularly though)
  • Lip scrub and balm need to be used in order to get the smoothest application
Overall, I am happy with these beauties and I'm already eyeing some of L.L.'s pre-sale colors for these liquid lipsticks. But I'll wait for another sale because these babies do need maintenance when wearing them.
